NYCfilter: TWU Local 100 rejects final MTA offer
Looks like this strike is gonna happen.
Hell, I could use a day off.

Well. I have no idea what this means. *claps anyway*

As a former resident of France, I say: "ca fait bon, les mecs!"

As a former resident of New York, I say: "way to go, guys!"

Seriously, unionization benefits us all, in the long run. Even if it's a pain in the ass right now, the strike represents better work conditions for everyone.

Sorry to all you guys in NY who have to deal with this, but really, unions are good.

they're better than good--they're responsible for all the workplace safety laws and protections and pensions etc that we have at all.

/just got off a NYC bus that was still running at 1 am

Yeah, unions are good. seriously. But I really hope they work this out soon. This is a major pain in the keister for those of us that live here.

I love it. I walk to work anyway, and when the trains aren't running, my sleep is uninterrupted. But I hope they resolve it soon; it's inconvenient for a whole bunch of folks.

Well, you're one of a very select few, my friend. Like I said, I'm sympathetic to most of the workers demands, but the net effect on my life is to make it extremely difficult. But hopefully it won't last long, so today I'm just sitting here in my jammies drinking some java.

unions are good and bad. The MTA seems to be pretty fucking corrupt.
I don't have all of the facts, I'd love to see a list of the demands and the arguments against them. The coverage of this has be usually poor. I encourage anyone to prove me wrong.

As i understand it, working for the MTA is a pretty sweet deal for a city job. 55 to retire? Who has that?

And what the fuck is Bloomberg doing walking over the bridge? Get to fucking work!

Unions are good things, yes. They generally do good things.

But the transport unions piss me off so much. Maybe the unions in the US are different. They ask for above-inflation pay increases when they're already earning over £30k (~$53k). That's management-level pay in many industries. And they deliberately strike when the impact will be greatest to force TfL to give in to their blackmail.

Never mind us public, as long as they get their above-inflation pay increases.

I'd like to give Bob Crow a good beating. I saw him on the news once. Incapable of putting a set of shelves together, let alone a coherent argument.

They retire at 55 because life expectancy goes way down after working in them tunnels for a spell. Like coal mining, just different dusts.

Also because they a-have themselves a powerful powerful union.

Right, I had heard that and forgotten, Janus. That does make more sense.

Pretty much all municipal workers have early retirement, as far as I know. Firemen, cops, and sanitation workers for sure.
